This guide is a general process for installing a pre-hung door, but keep in mind that each installation may have unique requirements. Please read the manufacturer's instructions or consult with one of our professionals if needed.

What's a Pre-Hung Door?
A pre-hung door is a door that is already attached to its frame, which includes the hinges and the door jamb. This type of door is designed to be installed as a complete unit. Pre-hung doors are commonly used in new construction, as well as in replacement projects where the old frame has been removed. They are available in a wide range of sizes, materials, and styles to suit different preferences and needs.
Our Pre-Hung Door Installation Process
There are many aspects that dictate the exact installation procedure one might use to install a pre-hung door. Every door opening is different and therefore every installation will be different, but here are some basics steps used to install a basic pre-hung door into an existing door opening.

Removing The Old Door
Remove the door trim
To prevent tear-out, it's important to cut the caulk between the trim and the door frame gently with a blade. Use a pry bar or hammer to gently remove the trim around the door frame.
Remove the hinge pins
With the door open, remove the hinge pins by tapping them out with a hammer and a nail or a small screwdriver. You can also use pliers to remove the pins.
Remove the door from the frame
Once the hinge pins are removed, carefully lift the door out of the frame.
Remove the remaining hardware
Remove any remaining screws or hardware from the door frame, including the strikeplate and latch.
Remove the door frame
Use a pry bar to gently remove the door frame from the rough opening. Sometimes a reciprocating or oscillating saw is required to remove the nails holding the frame in place.
Remove the remaining hardware
Remove any remaining screws or hardware from the door frame, including the strike plate and latch.
Clean up
Clean up any debris and patch any holes left in the wall.
Installing the New Door
Measure the Doorway
Measure the height and width of the doorway where the pre-hung door will be installed. Ensure that the measurements are accurate, and that the doorway is square.
Prepare the Doorway
With the old door removed check the floor for level and add shims if necessary. If the doorway is not square, use a saw or plane to trim the opening.
Install the Pre-Hung Door
Place the pre-hung door into the doorway and use shims to adjust the position of the door until it is level and plumb. Check the reveal around the door to ensure that it is consistent. Use a chisel to remove any excess wood from the mortise for the hinges if necessary. Once you are satisfied with the position of the door, secure it in place by nailing the shims to the framing.
Install the Doorknob and Lockset
Following the manufacturer's instructions, install the doorknob and lockset onto the door. Make sure that the latch aligns with the strike plate on the door frame. Test the doorknob and lockset to ensure that they work properly.
Please note that not all pre-hung doors come with door handles and locks. These will need to be purchased separately.
Trim the Shims
Once the door is installed and the lockset is in place, trim the shims flush with the door frame. Use a utility knife or a saw to carefully cut the shims.
Install the Door Casing
Measure and cut the door casing (door trim) using a miter saw. Place the casing flush with the door jamb. Use a nail gun or nails to secure the door casing (door trim) in place. Fill any gaps between the door casing (door trim) and the wall with caulk.
Finish the Door
Sand the door and casing with sandpaper, then paint or stain it to match the interior of your home.
